Smashing and perplexing, Beat, intruiging and chilly, smooth Spoken Word yard dog of sorts, Rich Ferguson, pairs with orange-mohawked, convulsive distorted electric guitar and Apple laptop/Live player Paul Garrison to form Nightlight Jesus, the unique vessel that gets off the peculiar genius of each, just so.
Listening to Nightlight Jesus’ disarming arrangements is a bit like eating chunks of juicy cantaloupe that have been flopped around in chile-laced salt. Emotionally messy at times, their works are charged, entrancing, stimulating. Rich and Paul’s unusually complimentary flavors of distinction intermingle to crisply transport you to an altered realm. Yeah.
Temperamental and balls-out, the two feed off of each other.
Paul Garrison, who toured with Rickie Lee Jones, is compulsively experimental. He plays moody loops and riffs that drive Rich to his edge. Rich, a former poetry student of Allen Ginsberg, responds with varied tempos and tones via the delivery of a fascinating lyrical kabob that lands somewhere between Kerouac and Tom Waits.
