Sample the synth-dance sunburst of Discovery, a collaboration of Vampire Weekend’s Rostam and Ra Ra Riot’s Wes, also featuring Dirty Projectors’ Angel Deradoorian and Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig.
Orange Shirt[mp3] is flavored like a Jack-in-the-Box coil-loaded with Paul McCartney and Wings grafted to R Kelly.
According to their peeps, “it’s partly an attempt to realize Wes’s concept of a band where everyone plays synthesizers, and of Rostam’s concept for an album where handclaps keep the backbeat instead of snare drums. It’s an embrace and also
a commentary on the pop music of the past decade, of booming 808 bass and jittery sixteenth note high-hats.”
Summery fun, the album is loaded with luxuriant aural dreamsicles and titillatingly fuzz-grunge bass that feels like it’s vibrating inside a huge pvc pipe.
A fun change of pace, Discovery’s LP proves excellent for variety and some of the tracks great substitutes for toothpicks between the eyelids on a long road trip.
I Want You Back, by the way, revisits a Jackson 5 original on Ecstasy. Yes.
