Island, IS [mp3]

Volcano Choir is a collaborative effort between Wisconsinites Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) and Jon Mueller, Chris Rosenau, Jim Schoenecker, Daniel Spack and Thomas Wincek (Collections of Colonies of Bees). As everybody’s been busy with their main gigs, the band is just now getting around to releasing their debut album, Unmap, a group of songs made and recorded before Bon Iver flew off to celestial charts.

From the labelUnmap is…. “a document created by musicians with rare gifts getting together to exorcise their ideas about beauty.”

Sounds like this will be an exorcism not to miss. The vocals are nicely Bon Iver-y, while the music is glowingly layered with digital effect: crunchy samples, loops, wind tunnel echoes, rippling harmonic scale ascension and far away full moon howling. The vibe is tender, and the sound’s much akin to that of The Antlers. Juicy goodness.

Unmap (Jagjaguwar, 9/22/09)songlist:
