What happens when you get 8 insanely creative, diversely groovy musical artists coordinated and rocking together as a touring, performing band unit? We got to experience such a sensational event recently when NYC’s one-of-a-kind The Phenomenal Handclap Band arrived for a live Luxury Wafers Session. Their band name sums up their vibe, which in sound waves radiates part funk, part disco, part psychedelia, all completely, toweringly infectious.
Aesthetically, The Phenomenal Handclap Band lays out an undulating visual cornucopia.
Everybody moves in their own frequency and style, each member offering an indispensible talent and energy to perfectly demonstrate the familiar, mathematically impossible adage, “the whole is bigger than the sum of its parts.”
On top of luscious vocals and beauty, Laura wields an impressive tambourine. Joan adds vocals and brings the chic. At the heart of the collaboration are producers/songwriters Daniel Collás on synth, organ and tambourine and Sean Marquand on synth and cowbell. Other traveling band members: Patrick “Woody” Wood on drums, Luke O’Malley, dancing and guitar with effects that can sounds like a Huey, Bing Ji Ling the lion-maned on vocals and guitar, and Pier Pappalardo on bass. What a crew!
All of the songs played in the studio with us can also be found on their summer, self-titled release, Phenomenal Handclap Band (June 23, 2009, Friendly Fire), where there’s even more to work yourself into a frenzy over.
Super fun, massively danceable and catchy, clean fun for all, 15-20 should be the next big hit on Sesame Street (if it isn’t already). Check out the video below for the whole enchilada.
