Lissie Maurus, from Rock Island, Illinois, sings like the coal miner’s daughter with bubblegum-sweet edges. Picture Loretta Lynn with organic munchies and a designer dog. Comfy country flannel paired with a shiny pedicure. Lissie can do it any way she wants. Remarkably unselfconscious and naturally beautiful with a black gold voice of fertile southern dirt, Lissie – relevant and au courant – is an earthy creature from a non-planetary zip code and alternate dimension. Lissie is not cliche´. Pieces wild hellion and wide-eyed girl, Lissie impresses as a gal you’d find down by the stream in her Sunday best, happily dirt-smeared while attending to the serious business of discovering salamanders under rocks in the icy water while the sun bakes her head and bugs surround her, buzzing and chirping. Maybe she’d be inclined to pause and share a smoke and a drink with you before skipping lightly off to her next order of wilderness-inspired business. Conveying wonder, depth and quirky soulfulness in her music, Lissie is paradoxically both weighted in the heart and free in the spirit.
Our studio sessions are very casual by design. We want our guests to feel comfortable so we can get to know them and document an intimate, authentic glimpse into their world. Sometimes in our laid-back environment, girls and boys excuse themselves at the last minute to touch up hair or makeup, add or enhance with a dab of fashion, or simply check to make sure there’s no spinach between their teeth before appearing in front of a camera.
Lissie seemed to be the opposite. She arrived ‘together’ – well-kempt and organized and stunningly beautiful with no help needed from cosmetic companies or style magazines. Then, just before the session began, Lissie surprisingly transformed herself with tousled hair and oversized 1970′s men’s glasses. The point: Lissie is about Lissie’s music. Listen and hear her. Lissie has wonderful beauty to share through her songs.
