826LA, a generous and creative non-profit writing/tutoring center that works for free with LA’s school children, presents Chickens In Love. Sponsored by large-hearted hipsters Origami Vinyl, Bedrock LA, Echoplex, Engine Room Studios, The Echo Park Time Travel Mart and Filter Magazine, the multi-tiered project involved a lyric writing workshop hosted by LA band, The Submarines and directed in groups by members of Kissing Cousins, Frankel, Hexham Heads, Nico Stai, and The Monolators in December ’09. Student bands recorded their creations (also on video) with lyrical mentor artists. Next, a dozen local artists covered the songs for an upcoming LP release. Not only does the project actively connect students with the community in an enriching fashion, but it also generates ongoing awareness and financial support for the organization.
Each dollar pledge made through April 30th counts as a vote toward the 826LA Gold Record. And of course all students who participated will be enjoying an ice cream party to celebrate.
The local cover bands: – Fiona Apple with Jon Brion and The Punch Brothers, She & Him, Cold War Kids, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Tim & Eric, The Happy Hollows, Summer Darling, Dum Dum Girls, The Growlers, Crystal Antlers, The Pity Party, The Submarines.
