It’s hard to listen and not well with tears. Here they are: Cecilia/Amanda (previously unreleased until the very end of 2009; recorded at Jackpot! Recording Studio in 1997 by Larry Crane); Twilight, from From A Basement On The Hill; and Last Call from Roman Candle, Elliott Smith’s first solo album, originally released on Portland’s Cavity Search Records in 1994 and remastered for the re-release by Larry Crane, editor of Tape Op Magazine and archivist for Elliott’s family.
On April 6, 2010, Kill Rock Stars will be re-releasing Roman Candle and From A Basement On The Hill, Elliot Smith’s final recording, originally released on Anti in October of 2004 following Smith’s sad and untimely death in 2003. Lyrically haunting, From A Basement On The Hill’s 15 heartbreaking tracks were narrowed by Smith’s close friends, producer Rob Schnapf (Beck’s MELLOW GOLD, Smith’s X/O) and musician Joanna Bolme (the Minders, Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks), from the original vision for a double album. Representing Smith’s full spectrum, it plays like a retrospective of his career.
With the addition of these two records Kill Rock Stars is now the home for all of Elliott Smith’s independent releases: Roman Candle, Elliott Smith, Either/Or, From a Basement on the Hill, and New Moon.
