Luxury Wafers Exclusive: The Duhks, Live@Chessvolt Studios

The Duhks (rhymes with 'bucks'), from Winnepeg, in their latest incarnation, dish label-defying, soulful pizazz. The centerpiece of the group is their new singer of prodigious talent (seriously - think steamroller like Billie and Ella), Sarah Dugas. She and her full-kit drumming brother, Christian, joined wonderfully unique founder Leonard Podolak on banjo, fine fiddler Tania Elizabeth, and mellow guitarist Jordan McConnellon, further convoluting the already environmentally and politically aware, genre-bending, acoustic bluegrassy roots of the band. The result is an impressive, encompassing futureworld of blended cultural influences and cross-pollinated styles worthy of Bulworth's approval.

In person, The Duhks' already charged music takes on an even livelier and more engaging form. Each member of the authentically friendly, musically mystifying quintet sports full-on distinctiveness, so while being swept about in the unclassifiable audio gale, audiences can grab onto the interesting visual component of the five - each so different - in action.

The Duhks' newest album, Fast Paced World (first with Sarah and Christian Dugas) is out on Sugar Hill.

Additionally, check out passionchild of Tania and Leonard, Greenduhks. All in the group share a down-to-earth love and respect for our Mother Planet. They walk the walk and eagerly promote awareness as they travel the land with their tunes.

The Duhks' rendition of Mighty Storm delivers a hot and gooey version of a soulful traditional, its intensity enhanced by dark, extreme sounding fiddle. Sleeping Is All I Want To Do is peppered with Tania's light fiddle and complimentary harmonies, while Dugas displays her incredible vocal range, each note spot-on. Toujours Vouloir comes off steamy and jazzy, sung in French, of course. You Don't See It has a pop-alt-country feel. Fast Paced World, their album's title track and the one we put to video, opens with catchy banjo picking, guitar and percussion. Its pointed lyrics demand several listens. The Duhks have a lot to say. Despite a sprawling repetoire of sounds, the heart of the band shines through in person and in their impeccable recordings.

Bear in mind when you listen that these exclusive tracks were recorded in one take, live. Amazing!
